Snow Days are Fabulous!

Well I thought that it was about time that I wrote on here again....if for no other reason than to give you all something to read about other than ABBA!

So it's the second snow day of the season and as I look out my window we have less than a centimetre of snow, it's completely clear and even a little sunny. So how does this qualify as a snow day, you ask? Who cares! It meant that I got to sleep in, because for once I actually got the phone call before I got out of bed, which is amazing for our school....normally the phone rings as I'm walking out the door! And so far this morning I've done lots of much needed house work! Next on the list is school work, but who wants to ruin a good day off with that!

Anyways, I hope this blog finds everyone who is reading it, well! And I guess I'm off to finish the next thing on my list! Happy Snow Day to all!

For lack of anything else to write about...

Continuing our Abba saga...

N0-one danced in the aisles... except a few older ladies who felt jipped by the fact that the whole musical had gone by without anyone getting up and dancing, or singing for that matter. So on the last couple songs they would try standing up. I kinda compared it to the time in a church service when the one person stands up for a song, even though you're not supposed to stand up, and it's kindof uncomfortable for a minute, until someone else stands up to ease the tension, and then the whole church stands up... Well, this wasn't a church service -- it was a musical -- and no-one else really wanted to stand up for a stranger. So it was kindof like a whack-a-mole going on.

Le Flu

Steph and I have been feeling awful this week. Steph's been battling flu-like symptoms, and I've slowly received a cold. The cold hit me full force yesterday, and the flu got to Steph yesterday.
It isn't much fun.
So does anyone have any instant cures? Besides jumping off a cliff?

Musicals and Their Influence on an Impressionable Youth

As you've heard, Steph and I went to see Abba's "Momma Mia!" musical on Hamilton's Broadway. Before we went to this musical, Steph insisted on buying their Gold (Greatest Hits) album so that she could learn the lyrics. I think we were both scared that we would be the only ones in the theatre who didn't know the words to any song other than 'Momma Mia'. We had been told that everyone gets up and dances in the aisles and sings along to every song... That's a scary thought for good Christian Reformed kids like us. So we bought the cd, downloaded it onto our computer playlist and have been listening and getting to know them.
Remember... this is Abba... I'm listening to ABBA (that first B should be reversed...)

Anyways, Steph and I got to talking about what band would make a great musical from our generation. I mean, there's Abba's "Momma Mia," and Queen's "Killer Queen" or something like that. So what would make a great musical from our generation?

We think Aqua would fit the bill. Maybe a Candyman version of "The Nutcracker Suite". And the main character could call out to Barbiegirl, "Come with me honey, I'm your sweet sugar, candyman"

The Winner Takes It All

Maybe I'm just a cynic, but...

Remember during the election when Dalton McGuinty praised the Ontario School System, saying something along the lines of:

"I love Ontario Schools because they're ours; They're a place where Ontarians can be educated, free of religious beliefs; free of persecution, yadda,yadda,yadda", and it won him the election?

Well...

The Ministry of Education was recently given the Falconer Report (named for Julian Falconer) on the safety of Ontario's Schools. Our Schools of Ontario were described as breeding a "Culture of Fear, Frustration, and Violence".

Way to go Ontario!

If it's true that Schools are microcosms of the larger society -- therefore, the problems in the schools reflect the problems that face society -- what does that really mean for Ontario?

Should we hire a social worker for every classroom? Or, put more police at the entrances?

Is the same true of our Christian Schools? Or are we actually managing to be the Salt/light of Ontario?

It's January....

I don't really think I like the month of January....It's gloomy, cold, and it means going back to work after a couple of much too busy weeks off. Despite all of this, we're finally getting back into the routine of things here (not that we want to be!). School's back in full swing for both of us, with Dave trying to stay caught up on readings and me trying to control my hooligans so that I don't go as crazy as before Christmas break! We're also both looking for jobs for next year, so if anyone hears of any openings, be sure to let us know.
One good thing that's happened is that we went to Mamma Mia yesterday at Hamilton Place. For those of you who missed it, Dave bought me tickets for Christmas and was rubbing in my face for like three months before Christmas! Anyways, yesterday was the big day, and it was really cool! We were a little disappointed by the simplicity of the set, but the story line and music were great! We both enjoyed it, although Dave always leaves those places feeling really stiff....he's too tall for seats with very little leg room. But it was fun to go out on a "date" and just to do something different!

Lovin' the Library...

Every month, Steph takes out approximately 100 children's books from the public library. She divides the books up into 5 baskets, and each student in her class is assigned to a basket. The kids get the opportunity to read different books every month.
What's the biggest fine you've ever heard of at a public library?
I'll tell you!
$150~! For those of you who don't read numerical digits -- ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS!!!!
Steph almost fell off the couch when she heard that number.

Today, I'm thankful for the Librarians. Those stewards of the books and knowledge. The shelvers of books. The Maidens who waved our fine.
